Mental Wellness Month
January is the month we celebrate Mental Wellness. When we talk about mental health, this refers to behavioral, emotional, or psychological disorders. The National Alliance on Mental Illness report that at least 14 million adults experience mental illness each year. That means one in five Americans adults suffer with mild to serious symptoms.
Depression, anxiety, bipolar, eating disorders, and substance use disorders can all be in the mental health disorder category. Kleptomania, pyromania, or having a paranoid personality are sometimes included in this catergory as well, but it is less common.
Only a small portion of those diagnosed receive proper treatment, even though there are treatments available that can greatly improve symptoms. We need to break the stigma associated with mental illness so those suffering can get the help they need. With the proper assistance, they can get healthy and start to live better personal, professional and social lives.
